Sigval Bergesen de

Berge Sigval Nathanael Bergesen was a Norwegian shipowner and parliamentary representative for the Conservative Party. Bergesen was a pupil at Kongsgaard school in Stavanger.

Bergesen was born on April 3, 1863 in Farsund in Vest-Agder.  He is best known as Sigval Bergesen de and is the father of Sigval Bergesen dy He started a shipping company in Stavanger in 1887 . His fleet grew to be the city's largest. He was a parliamentary representative in the period 1903–1909, and for 20 years he was a keen champion of the Sørlandsbanen. He was chairman and member of a large number of boards, boards of representatives and committees. Among other things, he was chairman of the board of the Norwegian American Line 1929–1939. In 1922 he gave carillons to the Cathedral in Stavanger.

Bergesen was appointed a knight of the first class of the Order of St. Olav . He was also awarded the 7 June Medal .

A statue of Sigvald Bergesen, made by the artist Ottar Espeland, is located at the railway station in Stavanger . Bergesen himself was able to attend the unveiling on 7 June 1953. The statue is financed with collected funds. The location at the terminus of Sørlandsbanen was a thank you for the effort in getting the track built.

He died on December 4, 1956.
