Valentin Jeker

Valentin Jeker was a highly respected Swiss actor and theater director who spent over six decades shaping European stage performance.

Known for his creative versatility, he was as comfortable performing in front of an audience as he was directing from behind the scenes.

Jeker was born on October 26, 1934, his journey into the arts began after he graduated from high school in 1957. He spent the next three years studying his craft at the Zurich School of Acting. By the early 1960s, he had already begun building his professional reputation, working in various roles at prominent theaters in Ulm and Stuttgart. It was during this time that he transitioned from assisting others to leading his own productions, debuting with plays like Pioneers in Ingolstadt.

Throughout the 1970s and 80s, Jeker became a fixture in the German theater scene. He was particularly well-known for his long-term collaboration with director Manfred Beilharz. Together, they moved through several major theater houses, including the Landestheater Tübingen and the Kassel State Theatre. Jeker was celebrated for his ability to handle complex, classic material from playwrights like Schiller and Molière, while also tackling modern masterpieces. One of his most famous moments occurred in 1986, when he both directed and starred as Pozzo in Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot.

In his later career, Jeker continued to innovate. He worked extensively at the Schauspiel Bonn starting in 1991 and later moved to the Wiesbaden State Theatre in 2002. Even in his 80s, his creativity remained sharp; in 2015, he surprised the public by debuting as a painter with a solo exhibition in Berlin.

Jeker passed away in Kassel on February 8, 2026, at the age of 91. He leaves behind a significant artistic legacy through his hundreds of stage productions and his children, including his daughter, the well-known actress Katharina Wackernagel. His life stands as a testament to the power of lifelong dedication to the arts.
